NASA’s Office of Safety and Mission Assurance, in coordination with the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, has prepared a new Quick‑Start Guide to support mission teams pursuing Mars Category IVa landing missions.
As NASA and its partners continue advancing lower‑cost Mars surface missions, the agency is taking deliberate steps to ensure that planetary protection compliance remains clear, consistent and accessible to a broadening community of mission developers. The new guide introduces the fundamental planetary protection requirements for Category IVa missions and establishes a structured path for demonstrating compliance with NASA‑STD‑8719.27, Implementing Planetary Protection Requirements for Space Flight.
The primer describes the baseline expectations for missions assembled under Category IVa, including cleanroom standards, documentation and reporting requirements, organic and biological material inventories and compliance pathways for both landed elements and upper‑stage hardware. Particular attention is given to mission configurations that include secondary payloads or separated elements, providing teams with clear criteria for classification and contamination‑control responsibilities across dispersed mission components.
To support early‑stage planning, the Quick‑Start Guide incorporates insights drawn from historical Mars missions such as Mars Pathfinder, Mars Polar Lander, the Mars Exploration Rovers, Mars Science Laboratory, InSight and Mars 2020. These examples illustrate how prior projects have implemented planetary protection requirements across a range of mission profiles, offering mission teams a grounded understanding of compliance strategies that have proven effective in practice.
The guide was released on Oct. 20, 2026 and may be viewed here. A companion resource, the Mars Planetary Protection Primer Cat IV 2026 - PPEL Template, is also now available.
