LDE Committee

The NASA Lifting Devices and Equipment (LDE) Committee works to make certain that the Lifting Standard (NASA-STD-8719.9) is a practical, up-to-date and useful document. This committee, consisting of the LDE managers at the centers and chaired by the director, Safety and Assurance Requirements Division, or designee, also provides a forum for exchange of information regarding equipment, procedures, lessons learned and best practices.

There are also center LDE committees that perform similar roles at a local level.

Forklift Safety Resources

Forklift accidents are the number one fatality in lifting devices worldwide. At NASA, the top areas of concern when operating forklifts are center of gravity issues and overloading, improper fork position when transporting loads, improper securing of payloads, poor visibility, and operator qualifications. Safe lifting operations require managers and equipment operators to remain focused on inspection, and the entire lift crew focused on safety protocols. Visit the NASA Safety Center website for resources related to forklift safety.
