On May 5, 2025, NASA updated NASA-STD-7919.1, NASA Commercial Aviation Services (CAS) Standard to Change 1. The standard, published on July 10, 2024, provides technical requirements for commercial aircraft flight operations and Change 1 clarifies flight operations requirements. Specifically, the changes include

  • Addition of new paragraph 4.5.2, under “CAS Inspection Process,” which clarifies CAS inspections are not required for Department of Defense aircraft or missions.
  • Addition of new paragraph 4.5.6, “Virtual Inspections,” which allows for virtual inspections instead of onsite inspections in certain cases. Virtual inspections are not in addition to onsite inspections.
  • Addition of paragraph 4.5.8.2, “Government Maintenance Site Visit,” which clarifies that governments site visits are another type of CAS surveillance (4.5.8). The other two types previously listed are Misson-Oriented Safety Assessment (MOSA) and CAS Operator update requirements.
  • Correction of crewmember flight time in 7.9.1.d to match the time allowed by the Federal Aviation Administration.
  • Moving and restating paragraph 9.4 to 8.21.4.i.
  • Addition of definitions for
    • Extended Operations Performance Standards (ETOPS) and
    • ETOPS authorization
  • Correction of the definition for ETOPS entry point.
  • Correction of nomenclature and acronyms.
  • Other editorial and formatting corrections.

The updates reflect input from the CAS Working Group that includes individuals from multiple NASA Headquarters offices, six NASA centers with CAS and several contributing contractors.
