Model-Based Mission Assurance

Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) is seeing increased application in the planning and designing of NASA’s missions. The Office of Safety and Mission Assurance is calling the corresponding approach to mission assurance Model-Based Mission Assurance (MBMA).

In MBSE, a virtual model of the system is created, typically while it is still in the designing and planning phase. The model is used as a singular reference source — a "single point of truth" — for system concept, requirements and design, and verification and validation and associated data. Safety and Mission Assurance (SMA) can leverage that model to perform a variety of assurance analyses earlier in the life cycle reducing the occurrence of costly changes after the system design hardens. By using the MBSE model, SMA personnel will be able to run simulations and tests in real time, instead of having to wade through — in some cases — thousands of pages of documentation. In addition to being timelier, MBMA promises to be more flexible, quick and cost-effective.

The NASA Electronic Parts and Packaging Program is bridging gaps between engineering and assurance disciplines using a Model-Based Mission Assurance tool built around NASA-STD-8729.1, NASA Reliability and Maintainability (R&M) Standard for Spaceflight and Support Systems. The tool — the Systems Engineering and Assurance Modeling platform — is a web-based collaborative platform for modeling assurance cases that can be integrated with the models of the system.
