The Office of Safety and Mission Assurance enhanced the Payload Safety program to cover all payload projects. As part of this process, the program recently released a revision to NASA-STD-8719.24, NASA Payload Safety Requirements, effective March 20, 2022. This standard update followed a significant revision to NPR 8715.7B, NASA Payload Safety Program, effective April 27, 2020.

Recently, the Expendable Launch Vehicle (ELV) Payload Safety Program released a new course “Safety Guidance for Payloads” (SMA-HQ-WBT-104) to the agency in SATERN. The course focuses on ensuring a consistent level of safety for special-case ELV payloads, which are payloads that either 1) don’t use the Launch Services Program or 2) rideshare with a primary payload on an ELV. 

Recently, a new course, “Expendable Launch Vehicle Payload Safety Requirements” (SMA-HQ-WBT-206), was released to the agency in SATERN. The course focuses on NASA-STD-8719.24, NASA Expendable Launch Vehicle Payload Safety Requirements.

Changes to NASA-STD-8719.24 align the standard with policy changes made to NPR 8715.7 last February. 

NASA’s Expendable Launch Vehicle (ELV) Payload Safety Program hosted a workshop at Kennedy Space Center Dec. 3-4.

Recent changes to NPR 8715.7, Expendable Launch Vehicle (ELV) Payload Safety Program, reflect new program standards and improve the overall ELV payload safety review and approval process.

The Expendable Launch Vehicle (ELV) Payload Safety Program recently released a new training course and revised three safety forms. Established in 2008, the ELV Payload Safety Program attempts to mitigate and eliminate payload hazards and the hazards affecting the related facilities and personnel.
