The NASA Safety Center (NSC) Technology and Innovative Solutions Office (TISO) recently created a highly praised custom dashboard for Johnson Space Center’s (JSC) institutional risk data.

TISO supports the Agency Risk Management Officer (ARMO), mission directorates and centers by developing tools and dashboards to visualize risk data.

JSC recently transitioned to the Integrated Risk Insight System (IRIS) to track and manage institutional risks across the center. The system’s expansive editing capabilities and flexible export options created an opportunity for TISO and the JSC Institutional Risk team to collaborate on ways to enhance how risk information is shared and analyzed during reviews, moving away from standard PowerPoint decks that are often labor-intensive and time-consuming, to automated dashboard visualizations.

TISO streamlined the review process by transforming a 50+ page quarterly presentation into an interactive Power BI dashboard that risk managers could use to facilitate and present all the center risks in a uniform and integrated fashion.

“The dashboard makes everyday risk management so much easier. The visualizations help to better analyze risk data and allow for internal organizational discussions without having to prepare separate charts and meeting aids. This creates more space to focus on mitigation strategy and decision‑making,” said Reid Mills, Engineering Directorate (EA) risk manager.

TISO worked closely with Jessica Morgan, JSC’s center risk manager, to define the center’s reporting needs and create the new Power BI dashboard for use at quarterly reviews, monthly working groups and internal statuses. The dashboard was debuted at the January quarterly Institutional Risk Review, where Morgan was able to easily facilitate the entire meeting within Power BI, switching from one directorate’s risks to the next so each directorate could present its top risks.

“We finished the review 30 minutes early, [which] is unheard of for these reviews. Several people commented that the dashboard facilitated easier, faster conversation,” said Morgan.

The custom dashboard earned praise from all levels of JSC leadership and risk managers, who noted how efficient this digital transformation was and how much time the dashboard saved in preparation for the review.

“The dashboard really modernized the risk process. It saved so much time on data entry and made for a more productive review,” said Kelly Guempel, Exploration, Architecture, Integration and Science Directorate (XA) risk manager.
