Andrea Bonesteel, Occupational Safety and Health specialist, received a “Yes, If” coin for her instrumental role within the Safety Culture Working Group and the Institutional Safety Program Audit (ISPA) team. Bonesteel retired on March 28, after 14 years of NASA service and 45 years of federal service.

Bonesteel managed several areas at Glenn Research Center, including leading the Ergonomics Program as a Subject Matter Expert. She also led the Glenn student safety program and ensured all new students maintained their safety, health and environmental training requirements.

Bonesteel also participated in the Safety Culture Working Group and the ISPA team. For the working group, Bonesteel was instrumental in recommending efficiencies for safety assessments and taking those recommendations to create, test and verify an online form that the group uses during its onsite ISPAs.

“Andrea’s ‘Yes, If’ attitude in all her work helped increase efficiencies and the effectiveness of our assessments,” said David Sheldon, ISPA Center Safety and Health Management auditor. “Andrea has consistently made significant contributions to the Safety Culture Program and demonstrated a willingness to work positively and respectfully with the team, which ultimately advances safety and mission success.”

Bonesteel’s support for the promotion of a stronger Safety Culture continued as she supported an audit at Wallops Flight Center. Post audit, she recommended and implemented meaningful changes to the working group’s process using lessons learned. She also supported the Ames Research Center ISPA in October 2024.

Bonesteel’s commitment embodies a “Yes, If” attitude, capturing the spirit of the award, and the positive impact it has on NASA’s overall Safety Culture.

Zane Myers, a Space Environments Complex (SEC) test engineer in department HE00, received a “Yes, If” coin for his innovative problem-solving and creative solution that enhances safety for crane operators.

Myers created and designed a dynamometer holder to help make critical lifts safer for crane operators.

He used one of Glenn’s new 3D printers to create and print the design. Myers’ utilization of Glenn’s resources allowed for an innovative, cost-friendly solution to an ongoing safety challenge.

The crane controller itself is about 10 inches wide and weighs a few pounds. During a lift, crane operators were using the controller while also holding the dynamometer that displays the active load of the lift. Both are important to monitor during critical lifts.

Myers designed the holder for the dynamometer that mounts to the crane controller, so operators can manage the controller and view the dynamometer readout at the same time.

James Klein, a lead facility engineer for the SEC, was impressed by Myers’ solution.

“Zane’s holder design helps make critical lifts safer,” Klein said. “It also reduces physical stress on the crane operator since he/she can use both hands to operate the controller.”

"Yes, If” NASA Culture

The “Yes, If” recognition coin represents the type of culture NASA wants to promote. An employee’s response to “Is this possible?” should be “Yes, if …” instead of “No, because …”.

Recipients of a “Yes, If” coin exemplify the spirit of ingenuity, creativity and commitment to safety that the agency was built upon.
