Institutional Safety Management Division

The Institutional Safety Management Division (ISMD) monitors, promotes and actively maintains and improves the Institutional Safety discipline areas and helps identify and mitigate Institutional Safety risks.

Who We Are

The Institutional Safety Management Division (ISMD) consists of the discipline experts necessary for providing the agency with policy, technical assessment and advice to protect the public, NASA workforce and high-value assets from the hazards associated with NASA activities and operations. Because of NASA’s unique mission, ISMD includes discipline expertises in addition to those traditionally included in Facility Safety and Occupational Safety, such as Pressure Systems, Lifting Devices and Equipment, Range Flight Safety, Payload Safety, and Aviation Safety.    

What We Do

The Institutional Safety Management Division (ISMD)

  • Develops and maintains NASA-wide Institutional Safety policies, standards and practices
  • Participates in the development of national and international industry Voluntary Consensus Standards
  • Performs audits and assessments of center and Federally Funded Research and Development Centers Institutional Safety policies and programs
  • Evaluates center Institutional Safety performance self-assessments and risks, including development of Office of Safety and Mission Assurance (OSMA) Center Safety and Mission Assurance (SMA) Heath Assessments
  • Investigates and coordinates with centers and the Mission Support Directorate on the resolution of conditions that significantly affect Institutional Safety
  • Identifies, analyzes, tracks and communicates risks and concerns related to Institutional Safety across the agency
  • Provides expert advice to the chief, SMA; center SMA directors; other senior officials; and agency committees
  • Ensures agencywide availability of relevant guidance and training
  • Leads agencywide working groups and task forces of Subject Matter Experts and center representatives
  • Conducts technical assessments and studies to mitigate risks or advance the state-of-the-art
  • Evaluates requests for relief from requirements on behalf of the chief, SMA
  • Represents OSMA towards Occupational Safety and Health Administration and other federal/state agencies
  • Enhances awareness of relevant policies, events, risks and capabilities by sharing information with the agency’s senior leaders and the workforce

Mission

The Institutional Safety Management Division (ISMD) fosters a strong institutional program across the agency through risk identification and mitigation, policy development, and partnering with center and agency organizations to protect the public, NASA workforce and high-value assets from the hazards associated with NASA activities and operation.

Vision

It is ISMD’s vision to bring about the necessary conditions to ensure NASA maintains its status as an organization with a world-class safety program while achieving the agency’s missions and meeting the challenges of aging infrastructure and reduced resources.
