“NASA payload missions involve various combinations of payload organizations, payload contractors, launch vehicles, payload processing sites, and launch sites. To address this situation, a key aspect of the safety review process is the establishment of a unique PSWG [Payload Safety Working Group] for each payload.

“Each PSWG and its required activities are designed to ensure the appropriate involvement and coordination of all organizations and stakeholders that support the associated mission and share safety responsibility for the mission (internal and external to the Agency)."

NASA ELV Payload Safety Program Overview of NPR 8715.7 SMA-070-01

Provides important training for anyone joining the Payload Safety discipline. Specifically, the course is intended for NASA Expendable Launch Vehicle (ELV) payload project managers, project engineers, system engineers, system safety engineers, Payload Safety Working Group members, launch site integration managers and others involved in payload safety. Eventually, the course also will become a part of the Safety and Mission Assurance Technical Excellence Program.

This course is designed to improve the learner’s ability to understand and navigate NASA-STD-8719.24. The purpose of this course is to provide Payload Safety guidance for NASA’s payloads that are launched on a non-crewed vehicle into orbit and do not interface with the ISS. The focus is on the safety process for various types of special-case payloads in proportion to the mission hazards.
